A handful of retailers have filed for bankruptcy protection since the coronavirus pandemic started.
In most cases, the companies are seeking to restructure their businesses to better position themselves to compete post-coronavirus, rather than to liquidate and fold. But reorganizing doesn’t guarantee long-term success, and the unprecedented nature of the ongoing pandemic leaves plenty of room for uncertainty.
As J.C. Penney CEO Jill Soltau put it in a recent announcement:
“The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for our families, our loved ones, our communities, and our country. As a result, the American retail industry has experienced a profoundly different new reality …”
So, for the following retailers — all of which recently petitioned for bankruptcy protection or are owned by a parent company that did — it’s possible that their current Memorial Day sales could prove to be their last.
If you want to support these well-known brands — or simply snag a deal this Memorial Day — check out their sales.
