A federal judge has cleared the way for millions of Alexa users to sue Amazon together over alleged privacy violations that could expose the tech giant to significant liability.
Lawsuit Claims Secret Recording
The class action lawsuit accuses Amazon of secretly recording private conversations through Alexa devices beyond intentional voice commands. Filed in 2021, the case alleges violations of consumer protection laws.
Plaintiffs claim Amazon failed to disclose that it retained and used recordings for commercial purposes. They argue the company designed its voice assistant to capture billions of private conversations without consent.
Judge Allows Nationwide Class Action
U.S. District Judge Robert Lasnik ruled Monday that Alexa users can proceed as a group seeking both monetary damages and court-ordered changes.
The judge noted that millions potentially suffered the same alleged harm. He stated that a class action is the most efficient way to handle related claims without overwhelming the court system.
Amazon Denies All Allegations
Amazon maintains it has done nothing wrong and disputes the claims. The company says no evidence exists that Alexa captured unintended conversations from any plaintiff.
The tech giant insists it built safeguards into Alexa to prevent accidental activation. Amazon contends its technology avoids recording conversations users don’t intend to share.
Plaintiffs Want Data Destroyed
Beyond financial compensation, the lawsuit seeks a court order requiring Amazon to destroy existing recordings. Plaintiffs want all data collected through the alleged scheme eliminated permanently.
The case could include additional groups such as California residents who lived with device owners. The judge has not finalized decisions on these supplementary class certification requests.
How to Protect Your Privacy
To minimize unwanted recordings from smart speakers, regularly review and delete your voice history. Most devices allow you to access stored recordings through companion apps.
Mute the microphone when not actively using voice commands. Look for the physical mute button that disables listening capabilities completely until you’re ready to interact.
Change your wake word to something less common. Default wake words can trigger accidentally during normal conversation, so select unique alternatives in device settings.
