Americans No Longer Trust Trump on Economy

Once touted as America’s business-savvy president, Donald Trump is facing a dramatic erosion of public confidence in his economic leadership. Recent polling reveals a stark reality: Americans are increasingly skeptical about his ability to deliver on economic promises.

Poll numbers show historic low in economic confidence

Just 37% of Americans approve of President Trump’s handling of the economy, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos survey. This marks his lowest economic approval rating ever recorded—falling below any point during his first term in office.

This decline represents a significant shift from the economic narrative that helped propel Trump back to the White House. During his campaign against then-Vice President Kamala Harris, he presented himself as the candidate who could tame inflation and revitalize the economy. The public’s faith in that promise now appears to be waning.

Sharp decline in confidence among voters

The trend is consistent across multiple surveys. A Pew Research Center poll found that only 45% of U.S. adults have confidence in Trump’s ability to make “good decisions” about the economy—a substantial 14-point drop from November of last year, when 59% expressed confidence in his economic decision-making.

A CNBC All-America Economic Survey further confirms this downward trajectory, showing just 43% of Americans approving of his economic management—again, his lowest rating throughout his entire White House career.

Tariff policies drawing widespread disapproval

Since taking office, Trump has focused primarily on imposing, pausing, and then reimposing tariffs—rather than delivering on promised tax cuts and deregulation. This approach has created market uncertainty and sparked concerns about a potential trade war.

Approximately 59% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s sweeping tariffs on imported goods, according to the Pew survey, suggesting his signature economic policy is failing to resonate with voters.

Partisan divide remains despite overall decline

Despite the overall drop in confidence, there remains a significant partisan split in how Americans view Trump’s economic leadership. About 80% of Republicans report being “very” or “somewhat confident” in his ability to make good decisions about economic and tax policy, while only 11% of Democrats express similar confidence.

Broader approval ratings also slipping

As Trump’s economic ratings fall, his overall job approval has declined as well. The Reuters/Ipsos poll shows approximately 42% of Americans approve of his job performance overall—down from 47% around his inauguration. Pew recorded a similar trend with a 7-point drop in overall approval since February.

For a president who campaigned heavily on economic competence, these numbers represent a troubling development. The question now becomes whether Trump can adjust his economic approach to rebuild the public trust that helped return him to office.
