The right paint can turn a tired room into an inviting space. Recently, J.D. Power issued the findings of its 2025 U.S. Paint Satisfaction Study.
J.D. Power surveyed more than 7,100 homeowners who had purchased and applied paint or stain to their homes in the prior 12 months. Brands and retailers were then ranked in the following categories:
- Interior paint
- Exterior paint
- Exterior stain
- Paint retailers
For both types of paint and even the paint retailer, the same brand ranked No. 1 in 2025.
Based on the survey findings, here are your best bets when selecting paint (or an exterior stain) — and well as the brands that earned the lowest customer satisfaction scores.
Interior paint
The average customer satisfaction score among interior paint brands was 718 out of 1,000 possible points. Here are those that scored above average:
- Sherwin-Williams: 728
- Behr: 727
- Benjamin Moore: 725
The brands that scored below average are:
- Valspar: 698
- Glidden: 677
- Dutch Boy: 674
Exterior paint
The average customer satisfaction score among exterior paint brands was 709 out of 1,000 points. Here are those that scored above average:
- Sherwin-Williams: 726
- Behr: 721
The brands that scored below average are:
- Benjamin Moore: 708
- Valspar: 675
- Glidden: 659
- Dutch Boy: 643
Exterior stain
The average customer satisfaction score among exterior stain brands was 705 out of 1,000. Here are those that beat the average score:
- Behr: 725
- Sherwin-Williams: 722
- Benjamin Moore: 712
The brands that scored below average are:
- Rust-Oleum: 693
- Thompson’s WaterSeal: 688
- Valspar: 671
- Dutch Boy: 662
- Cabot: 651
- Olympic: 624
Paint retailers
The average customer satisfaction score among paint retailers was 697 out of 1,000. Here are the ones that beat the average:

- Benjamin Moore independent retailer: 707
- The Home Depot: 702

- Menards: 684
