Questions before you decide

How do I compare credit cards?

Compare the APR for purchases, transfers, and cash advances; promotional end dates; annual, transfer, foreign-transaction, and penalty fees; grace period; credit requirements; and rewards you will actually use. Read the standardized disclosures and issuer agreement. If you expect to carry debt, cost matters more than headline rewards.

Is a rewards card worth an annual fee?

Estimate the value you would receive from ordinary spending and realistic redemptions, then subtract the annual fee and other costs. Benefits can change, and interest can overwhelm rewards when you carry a balance. Avoid increasing spending to earn a bonus, and compare the card with a no-fee alternative.

What should I check before a balance transfer?

Check the transfer fee, eligible debts, deadline, promotional APR and end date, go-to APR, and credit limit. Calculate a monthly payoff amount before applying. New purchases may accrue interest while a transferred balance remains, even when the transfer itself has a zero-percent rate, so consider using another card for purchases.

What is a credit-card grace period?

It is the time between the end of a billing cycle and the payment due date. If the card offers one, paying the purchase balance in full and on time can avoid interest. Grace periods usually do not apply to cash advances, and carrying a balance can remove the grace period for new purchases.

Is deferred interest the same as zero-percent interest?

No. With deferred interest, failing to pay the promotional purchase in full by the deadline can trigger interest back to the purchase date. Minimum payments may not clear it in time. Read the offer, track the exact end date, and calculate payments that retire the balance early while keeping every minimum payment current.
