When it comes to ranking car insurance companies, policyholders probably know best. And drivers rate the Auto Club Group — better known as AAA — as tops for car coverage, according to a survey by Insure.com.

In ranking the companies, Insure.com asked more than 3,000 policyholders to rate insurers by criteria such as value for price, customer service, claims satisfaction and more.

According to the website:

“The Auto Club Group didn’t just rank first overall; it also claimed the top spot for customers in claims handling, customer service, price and usefulness of websites and apps.”

According to these drivers, the top five companies are:

  • Auto Club Group (AAA): Score of 91.7 out of 100
  • CSAA Insurance Group: 89.6
  • USAA: 88.5
  • Auto Club of Southern California: 87.5
  • Erie Insurance: 85.3

Insure.com notes that two other companies — Mercury Insurance and Allstate — just missed landing in the top five, but still earned strong marks from customers.

How to avoid mistakes when shopping for auto insurance

To get the best deal on car insurance, you need to avoid making common missteps. For example, carrying a high level of coverage makes sense for many people. But for others, it can be a waste of cash. As we have reported:

“If you have few assets, you probably don’t need as high of a liability limit as someone with a lot to lose. If your car wouldn’t be expensive to replace, you might be able to get by with less collision or comprehensive coverage or drop that coverage entirely.”

Sometimes, using a service also can get you a better deal. Money Talks News founder Stacy Johnson realized he could save a bundle on his coverage by simply by using an online care insurance broker called Gabi.
