Over 1 million attic stairway ladders sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s and other home improvement stores have been recalled due to potential falls and injuries, a Kentucky importer has announced.
Louisville Ladder Inc. recalled the item, sold under the Louisville, Featherlite, Lite and Century brand names, in an alert on Aug. 6. The company recalled 1,770,000 of the ladders.
According to Louisville Ladder, the aluminum or wood frame ladders with gas struts come with handrails and fold into the attic.
The bolts on the ladders could break, causing those using them to be injured or fall to their deaths, Louisville Ladder announced on the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission website.
The attic stairway ladders were manufactured in Mexico and sold between November 2012 and July 2026 for between $170 and $600.
Which Ladders Are Recalled?
Louisville Ladder stressed that the only recalled items are the ladders with struts.
The ladders were sold in multiple sizes to fit different-sized attic openings in home ceilings, including:
- Width: 22.5 inches, 25.5 inches and 30 inches.
- Length: 54 inches and 60 inches.
- Ceiling heights from 7 feet, 8 inches to 12 feet.
The company has recalled ladders sold under the Century, Featherlite, Lite and Louisville brand names.
Customers can find the brand name and model number on the inside of the attic door and see the full list of recalled ladders at the recall website.
Where Were They Sold?
The ladders were sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Do It Best, Orgill, Amazon and other retailers nationwide, the company said.
Were There Injuries?
According to the announcement, there have been 11 reports of a bolt breaking, including a report that someone injured their neck, head and back.
What Should You Do?
The company said customers should stop using the ladders immediately. Customers should go to the recall website to get a free repair kit that includes two replacement ¼-inch spreader bolts, washers, lock nuts and installation instructions.
Customers will need the ladder’s model number, which is inside the attic door.
