Most seniors eventually will need some type of extra help with day-to-day life.

About 70% of people who are 65 today will need a form of long-term care services and support later in life, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Finding the right care is the key to living out your last years in comfort and peace. For millions of seniors, that means choosing the best independent living, assisted living or memory care facility.

Recently, J.D. Power surveyed just over 2,900 people as part of its latest annual U.S. Senior Living Satisfaction Study. The survey included residents living in independent communities, as well as family members/decision-makers with loved ones in assisted living/memory care communities.

Survey respondents were asked to rank independent living, assisted living and memory care providers based on six categories:

  • Community buildings and grounds
  • Community staff
  • Dining
  • Price paid for services received
  • Resident activities
  • Resident apartment/living unit

J.D. Power notes that the average cost of rent in an independent living facility is rising between 7% and 9% annually. Meanwhile, the average cost of assisted living and memory care has jumped 10%.

So, it’s somewhat surprising that in the past year, overall satisfaction with independent living communities has surged 25 points on a 1,000-point scale. Satisfaction with assisted living and memory care is up a healthy 12 points.

Read on to learn how specific facilities in each category scored for customer satisfaction.
