Recent elections have shown that America is a deeply divided nation. And few Americans think Donald Trump will be able to create a sense of unity during his second term as president.
Just 33% believe Trump will heal the political divisions in the country, according to a recent Gallup poll.
However, Americans’ outlook on Trump’s second stint as president is much more upbeat when it comes to some other key tasks, with as many as 68% of Americans confident in his ability to accomplish them.
Here are the goals Americans are most hopeful Trump will accomplish, followed by those in which they have the least confidence.
1. Control illegal immigration
Survey respondents who said they think the second Trump administration:
- Will be able to accomplish this: 68%
- Will not be able to accomplish this: 28%
During his campaign, Trump promised to stop illegal immigration and to both deport illegal aliens and secure the border, and he has since started working toward that goal. So, it’s perhaps unsurprising that Americans were overwhelmingly confident that the new president will achieve this goal, at least based on Gallup’s findings.
Shortly after Trump was elected to office in 2016, a Gallup poll taken at that time found that 59% of voters believed Trump would control illegal immigration. So, confidence in Trump’s ability to achieve this goal has increased by 9 percentage points.
2. Reduce unemployment (tie)
Survey respondents who said they think the second Trump administration:
- Will be able to accomplish this: 60%
- Will not be able to accomplish this: 37%
Trump pledged to “build the greatest economy in history.” According to his campaign platform, he plans to achieve that goal in part by:
- Cutting regulations, including ones that he said stifle jobs
- Creating jobs
- Raising wages
- Banning companies that outsource jobs to other countries from doing business with the federal government
Americans are largely bullish about Trump’s ability to improve the job market, and their current optimism on the topic is similar to how they felt after Trump was first elected in 2016. Back then, 62% of respondents told Gallup they expected him to reduce unemployment and create new jobs.
2. Keep the U.S. safe from terrorism (tie)
Survey respondents who said they think the second Trump administration:
- Will be able to accomplish this: 60%
- Will not be able to accomplish this: 37%
Thankfully, the U.S. has not seen many incidents of terrorism in recent years. Americans expect that trend to continue under Trump.
In fact, Americans are slightly more confident about Trump’s ability to achieve this goal now than they were in 2016, when 57% of respondents told Gallup they expected him to keep the nation safe from terrorism.

The goals that fewer Gallup survey respondents are confident about when it comes to Trump’s second term are as follows:
- Improve the economy: 58% think his second administration will be able to accomplish this
- Keep the nation out of war: 55%
- Cut your taxes: 54%
- Reduce the crime rate: 51%
- Increase respect for the United States abroad: 50%
- Improve the way the federal government works: 47%
- Reduce the prices of groceries and other items: 47%
- Improve conditions for minorities and the poor: 46%
- Substantially reduce the federal budget deficit: 45%
- Improve education: 43%
- Improve race relations: 41%
- Improve the health care system: 40%
- Improve the quality of the environment: 35%
- Heal political divisions in this country: 33%
