Picking a new furry family member is no simple task. It can take a lot of thought, consideration and … money.

According to a survey of pet owners by Rover — a website for finding dog walkers and pet sitters — the annual cost of food for an adult dog, on average, ranges from $655 to $1,905, and treats run from $50 to $730.

Then there’s gear like carriers, leashes and harnesses, which range from $65 to $205 per year, and vet visits at $75 to $110, on top of $602 to $1,120 for pet insurance.

Several factors can influence these costs. Different breeds are prone to different health conditions and have varying needs and lifespans. According to Rover’s survey findings, here’s how much common breeds can cost their owners per month.

Quick learners and eager to please, Chihuahuas caught the attention of American dog breeders and rose in popularity in the 19th century. They were well-revered long before that, though.

Chihuahuas were favorites of the Aztec Empire of Mexico and Central America. When Aztec nobles died, their Chihuahuas were often buried or cremated with them. Today, the dog breed shares its name with a state in Mexico.

Poodles were bred as water-retrieving dogs and accustomed to working. The miniature poodle was bred from the original, standard poodle breed by those who liked the personality of the breed but wanted a smaller pup.

Purina says that circuses were major influencers in the development of the miniature poodle. This breed was desirable as a performer thanks to its trainability, intellect and friendliness.

Goldendoodles are a relatively new “designer” breed that came about in the 1990s. This golden retriever-poodle mix can be a nice alternative for those who are sensitive or allergic to dogs because they don’t shed a lot. Goldendoodles are also good outdoor companions since they’re energetic and athletic.

Contrary to their name, the French bulldog actually originated in England. However, it quickly became popular as a lapdog among middle- and upper-class people in Paris, which led to the breed’s moniker.
