Homeowners Say These Are the Best Brands of House Paint

If you plan to spruce up your home soon, choosing the right paint likely will come down to exactly what type of project you have in mind.

Recently, J.D. Power issued the findings of its 2024 U.S. Paint Satisfaction Study.

J.D. Power surveyed nearly 7,000 homeowners who had applied paint or stain to their homes in the prior 12 months. Brands and retailers were then ranked in the following categories:

  • Interior paint
  • Exterior paint
  • Exterior stain
  • Paint retailers

Based on the survey findings, here are your best bets when selecting a paint for one of the above projects — and well as the brands that earned the lowest customer satisfaction scores.

The average customer satisfaction score among interior paint brands was 712 out of 1,000 possible points. Here are the those that scored above average:

  • Sherwin-Williams: 726
  • Behr: 723
  • Benjamin Moore: 717

The brands that scored below average are:

  • Dutch Boy: 700
  • Valspar: 684
  • Glidden: 647

The average customer satisfaction score among exterior paint brands was 713 out of 1,000 points. Here are those that scored above average:

  • Benjamin Moore: 739
  • Behr: 725

The brands that scored below average are:

  • Sherwin-Williams: 703
  • Dutch Boy: 695
  • Valspar: 694
  • Glidden: 675

Exterior stain

  • Cabot: 716
  • Rust-Oleum: 716
  • Benjamin Moore: 710
  • Behr: 707
  • Thompson’s WaterSeal: 707
  • Dutch Boy: 705

The brands that scored below average are:

  • Sherwin-Williams: 701
  • Valspar: 694
