Trader Joe’s continues to expand past its more humble beginnings.
Joe Coulombe had been managing a failing convenience store when he chose to try a new approach by starting a grocery store chain. His goal was to build a store for people who view food as something exciting and want more than just standard brands.
He launched his first store in 1967 in Pasadena, California, and in 1979, he sold the business to Theo Albrecht’s family, who also owned the Aldi supermarket chain in Europe.
Now Trader Joe’s operates hundreds of stores in 42 states and the District of Columbia, and it’s expanding. One may be coming to a neighborhood near you.
According to TipRanks, a group focused on providing data for investors, Trader Joe’s typically targets areas without pre-existing stores but has previously noted it considers opening new locations near existing ones if traffic patterns make it difficult for consumers to get between the two stores.
Thankfully, shoppers don’t have to do too much guessing about what’s to come this year.
