Tesla has recalled more than 20,000 vehicles for headlights that are too bright, posing a risk to the safety of others on the road.
Tesla, Inc. issued a recall for 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles because the headlight low beams may be too bright, exceeding the maximum light output, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report.
As of Aug. 2, Tesla was aware of three warranty claims and one field report related to the issue. No crashes, injuries or deaths had been reported to the vehicle manufacturer.
After Transport Canada tested the Tesla Model 3 in 2023, Tesla was informed in 2024 that the vehicle’s headlamp did not comply with low beam requirements, according to a Tesla chronology report for the recall. In spring 2024, Tesla petitioned to the NHTSA to be exempted from the organization’s Safety Act because the issue “is inconsequential as it relates to motor vehicle safety.” The NHTSA denied the petition in July 2026, the chronology report states.
What Tesla Vehicles Are Recalled?
Tesla estimates 100% of the outlined vehicles are impacted by the issue, according to the recall report:
- 2023 Model Y (18,735 vehicles impacted)
- 2017–2023 Model 3 (1,614 vehicles impacted)

As of Aug. 4, Tesla had not identified a remedy for the headlight issue. Vehicle owners may contact Tesla customer service at 1-877-798-3752. Tesla’s recall number is SB-24-17-003.
