The New Reality of AI-Driven Hiring and Firing

Videos circulating on social media, including TikTok, show people being fired by computer-generated characters, also known as AI avatars. They may be fake and strictly for clicks, but they reflect a real fear, and with good reason.

According to MarketWatch, six in ten managers already use artificial intelligence to make decisions about their employees.

Online clips may exaggerate reality for attention, but companies are relying on algorithms to decide who gets promoted, disciplined, or laid off. MarketWatch notes that some firms now use unfamiliar HR staff to deliver terminations, cutting workers off abruptly.

Hidden risks when algorithms make decisions

AI-driven job cuts do not always come with the usual warning signs, such as budget freezes or nervous managers. Algorithms can analyze productivity data, email patterns, or project completions in the background without you knowing you are under review.

The financial impact goes beyond a lost paycheck. Without a human advocate, workers may lose the chance to negotiate severance or explain a short-term performance dip. There is also the danger of algorithmic bias, which could unfairly affect older employees, remote workers, or people with different communication styles.

Warning signs your company may be automating HR

MarketWatch highlights several red flags that suggest your employer may be leaning on algorithms for employment decisions:

  • New performance tracking tools that monitor keystrokes, emails, or app usage
  • Requirements that all communication go through platforms that are easy to analyze
  • Termination meetings handled by unfamiliar HR reps or outside consultants
  • Automated scheduling or AI-powered performance reviews
  • Heavy emphasis on “data-driven culture” or “objective metrics”

Seeing several of these changes at once is a strong signal that your company may be leaning on AI for employment decisions.

Protecting yourself financially

If you are worried about your employment, it may be time to strengthen your financial safety net. AI-driven layoffs can strike with little notice, so personal financial defenses matter more than ever.

You may want to earn as much as possible on your emergency savings. SoFi Checking is offering 4.50% APY with $300 bonus with direct deposit. (May change without notice.) Traditional advice suggests three to six months of expenses in an emergency fund, but aiming for nine to twelve months could provide more security.

It also pays to diversify income. Start a side hustle that uses human strengths such as creativity, emotional intelligence, or problem-solving. Updating your skills to work with AI in your field can also make you harder to replace.

Knowing your rights

Even if a computer makes the decision, workers still have legal protections. Anti-discrimination laws remain in force, and some states are beginning to require disclosure when AI influences hiring or firing. MarketWatch notes regulations may soon mandate transparency and human review.

Keep records of your performance reviews, emails about your work, and any policy changes about AI. If terminated, you may have the right to know how the decision was made.

Thriving in an AI-influenced workplace

To safeguard your career, focus on areas AI cannot easily measure. Build relationships across teams, document achievements that go beyond numbers, and stay visible to decision-makers. Algorithms may crunch data, but human leaders still value trust, collaboration, and innovative thinking.

Companies are already formalizing their use of AI in HR. The question is not whether algorithms will shape employment decisions, but whether workers are prepared. Strengthening financial defenses and sharpening human skills could make all the difference when an algorithm decides who stays and who goes.
