The Smartest Car Safety Features Now Come in Affordable Cars

USA TODAY Network / Reuters

Thanks to advancements in technology, many futuristic and helpful driver-assistance features are now standard on many new vehicles. Cameras, sensors and software have improved in recent years, creating safety features that can prevent and mitigate collisions.

These features can also detect pedestrians, warn drivers to stay attentive and inform drivers when a passenger isn’t buckled up.

I’ve tested nearly 30 new vehicles this year including cars, trucks, SUVs and even vans. Here are some of the best car safety features that drivers can find in a new vehicle for under $30,000, based on my vehicle testing experience.

Forward collision-avoidance assist is incredibly useful

Even the American auto industry’s most affordable new vehicle, the 2026 Hyundai Venue ($20,550), comes standard with forward collision-avoidance assist with pedestrian detection. This advanced safety feature is designed to reduce or prevent front-end accidents for motorists.

The system monitors the speed and distance of vehicles as well as cyclists and pedestrians. It flashes a warning if the system senses that you are approaching something or someone too quickly and vibrates the steering wheel or sounds an alarm.

This safety feature is standard in several of the most affordable new car models of 2026 and can help drivers maintain safe distances from other motorists. It’s extremely useful when traffic stops abruptly. The feature may seem annoying or overly sensitive in some new vehicles, but it provides drivers with an extra layer of spatial awareness on the road.

Blind-spot monitoring is a game changer on the highway

One of my favorite new car safety features is blind-spot monitoring. This feature makes highway driving and lane switching much safer and easier for drivers.

Blind-spot monitoring uses sensors or cameras to detect vehicles that are approaching from lanes or areas that a driver may not see on their own. Once a vehicle or cyclist is detected by the sensors or cameras, drivers receive a visual alert, notifying them that it isn’t safe to switch lanes.

As a driver who regularly tests new vehicles, this feature gives me confidence when switching lanes because it notifies me whenever a vehicle is approaching from my left or right on the road. It makes driving more enjoyable because it can reduce close calls when switching lanes at moderate speeds.

The 2026 Mazda3 Sedan 2.5S starts at just $24,650. It comes standard with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, like many other affordable sedans and hatchbacks under $30K.

Automatic emergency braking is an important safety feature for affordable cars

Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is useful because it can prevent and mitigate collisions if drivers don’t respond to a potential crash quickly enough. This advanced vehicle safety technology uses cameras and sensors to measure distances between your vehicle and other vehicles or pedestrians, similarly to forward collision-avoidance assist.

It works with forward collision-avoidance assist to intervene even further by applying maximum braking force to slow or completely immobilize your vehicle. Automatic emergency braking may not prevent collisions, but it can help drivers mitigate accidents and bring vehicles to a stop more quickly.

Kia’s K4 is one of the most affordable new cars on the market ($22,290). It’s one of many new cars available for under $30,000 with standard automatic emergency braking.
