If you’re selling your home, take note: Your kitchen paint color can have a big impact on your home’s final sale price.
Homes with a kitchen painted in yellow – specifically creamy or wheat yellows – can command up to a $1,360 premium. That’s according to a new study from Zillow Digs, which analyzed more than 50,000 sold homes across the United States to determine how room and color combinations can impact homes’ sale price.
In addition to wheat yellow, homes painted with warm, earth tones like sage green and dove gray also sold for more money than expected. Meanwhile, dark paint colors like slate gray and terracotta actually brought down a home’s sale price by as much as $1,100. The study also suggests that white kitchens can have a negative impact on a home’s sale price.
In the bedroom, light green to khaki paint colors commanded the highest sales price while mauve, lavender or eggplant in the dining room also boosted a home’s value.
“A fresh coat of paint is an easy and affordable way to improve a home’s appearance before listing,” says Svenja Gudell, Zillow chief economist. “However, to get the biggest bang for your buck, stick with colors that have mass appeal so you attract as many potential buyers to your listing as possible. Warm neutrals like yellow or light gray are stylish and clean, signaling that the home is well cared for, or that previous owners had an eye for design that may translate to other areas within the house.”
Slapping a fresh coat of paint on your kitchen or another room in your house is isn’t difficult and it’s usually fairly cheap. According to HomeAdvisor, hiring someone to paint a room in your house can range from $380 to $790, not including trim, ceiling and the cost of the paint, but you can do the job yourself for around $200.
