A Super Bowl celebration without the traditional queso dip just doesn’t seem right. But it’s looking like you may have to seek an alternative dish this year as Kraft can’t seem to keep up with demand.

In an email to Advertising Age, Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore said:

Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks. Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue.

A shortage discovered at a few East Coast grocery stores prompted Advertising Age to contact Kraft. An employee at one of the stores had indicated that shipments would be delayed until February because of an issue at the manufacturing plant.

Moore gave this explanation:

I can tell you there is a combination of factors involved, but the driver is really the high demand. We really haven’t heard much from consumers about it at all. It’s a short-term issue amplified by the fact that this is a key time for the brand.”

If the thought of not indulging in Velveeta-based queso dip during the Super Bowl is sending chills through your body, the Los Angeles Times offered a key piece of advice: “Considering the long shelf life of a block of Velveeta, you could start stocking up now, well before the game on Feb. 2.”
