Visa cardholders, rejoice. Visa is now being accepted by Costco.

June 20 marks the official start of Costco Wholesale Corp.’s new agreements with Citi and Visa.

So, starting today, cardholders of Costco’s co-branded credit card must use the new Costco Anywhere Visa Card, a cash-back rewards card issued by Citi. Its predecessor, the co-branded Costco Card from American Express, is no longer being accepted.

Costco’s agreements mean Citi is the exclusive issuer of Costco’s co-branded credit card. In addition, Visa will replace American Express as the credit card network for Costco warehouses in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

As of today, Costco warehouses accept the following payment methods:

  • All Visa cards
  • Cash
  • Checks
  • Debit/ATM cards
  • EBT
  • Costco Cash Cards (which are essentially gift cards that can be purchased or reloaded by Costco members but used by anyone)

Costco.com accepts:

If you are a Costco co-branded credit cardholder, you should destroy the old American Express version of the card, as it is no longer valid.

If you are a Costco member or are considering becoming one, know that you are not required to apply for Costco’s co-branded credit card. Being a cardholder is not required for membership.
