Around a million potential new car buyers are leaving the new car market according to data from The Wall Street Journal.
It’s an incredibly difficult time for Americans to purchase a new car in 2026. The American auto market “posted its eighth consecutive monthly decline” says Yahoo Finance. A perfect storm of factors is causing new car ownership costs to skyrocket and completely price out many American drivers from the market entirely.
Here’s why many potential new car buyers are throwing in the towel when it comes to finding a good deal in 2026.
Why American Drivers Are Being Priced Out of the New Car Market
The new vehicle average transaction price was $49,461 in April, according to Kelley Blue Book. New car prices have increased by 1.8% year-over-year. Car tariffs have sent the new and used car markets into a frenzy. Aside from higher new car prices, drivers are also grappling with historically high gas prices which are driving up ownership costs.
Rising ownership costs are causing American drivers to look at alternative powertrain options and used models instead of new internal combustion engine vehicles.
Used hybrid and electric vehicles are appealing to drivers who want to save money on gas. Models like the used RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid with mild depreciation and low mileage offer serious value to consumers.
High interest rates on monthly car payments are also forcing American drivers to consider alternative options to vehicle ownership. Consumers are even showing a renewed interest in sedans because car models are generally more affordable and efficient than larger SUV and truck models.
What Are American Drivers Buying in 2026?
New vehicle sales data from Motor1 proves that sales for popular truck and SUV models in America remain steady despite high starting prices, record gas prices and high interest rates.
Best-selling vehicles of 2026 so far:
- Tesla Model Y: 78,591 (estimated units)
- Ram trucks: 98,425 units
- Honda CR-V: 99,437 units
- Chevrolet Silverado: 126,139 units
- Ford F-Series: 157,841 units
New car sales may be slipping, but consumer behavior hasn’t shifted dramatically in 2026. The greatest shift to new vehicle sales in recent years has been the impact of Tesla EVs like the Tesla Model Y small SUV and Tesla Model 3 small car.
Can You Buy an Affordable New Car in 2026?
New car prices have increased, but there are still affordable car brands on the market. Brands like Hyundai, Chevrolet, Kia, Nissan and more are producing new car models with starting prices under $24,000.
If you’re looking to save money on gas, there are also several affordable hybrid cars on the market, including the 2026 Honda Civic Hybrid ($29,395) and 2026 Toyota Camry ($29,300). We tested the new Camry in late 2025 and found it to be an exceptional value.
Finding the right new car deal is tough in 2026, but there are still affordable, practical, and efficient new models that are worth the money if you know where to look.
