“I started off as a light industrial.. just putting little doorknobs into bags. That was my first Kelly job. Now I’m actually working in an office and enjoying that.”
-Jamie Gacharna, Temp Worker

Jamie’s young, but he’s already experienced eight different jobs. He does temp work: working a job for days, weeks or months. Temp has an obvious disadvantage: it’s temporary. But for him, being able to sample different careers more than compensates.

“It’s more about variety. If I want to try something out, and I like it, I can stay with them. If I don’t, I can always just call up Kelly and say I want something different.”
-Jamie Gacharna, Temp Worker

And that’s not all. Temping also offers the opportunity to learn about the company and industry you might want to work for. It helps develop your resume and working skills. And it helps you form ideas of what you do and don’t want in a job and in a boss. And perhaps most important: It can often lead to a full-time job.

It provides opportunity for individuals looking for work to work with many of the Fortune 500 companies to get their foot in the door when otherwise they might not have that opportunity to do so.

“That’s one of the most thrilling things about what we do. We’re able to see individuals go from using temporary employment to get by to gain a full time career.”
-Pamela Sands, Kelly Services

Bottom line? Temporary work has some major advantages other than temporary income. But remember this: if you decide to go this road, make sure you do it in addition to your career search… not instead of it.
