AC Unit Mold Recall Hits 1.7 Million. Are Your Family and Finances at Risk?

Although your window air conditioner keeps you cool, it might harbor a nasty surprise. Midea just recalled 1.7 million units that could be breeding mold, and some folks have already experienced respiratory problems.

Here’s what’s happening: water is getting trapped inside these AC units instead of draining properly. That standing water creates the perfect breeding ground for mold, which is blown into your living space.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CSPC) has logged 152 complaints about mold buildup, with 17 people reporting everything from allergic reactions to respiratory infections.

Which units need immediate attention

The recall covers Midea’s U Window Air Conditioner and U+ Window Air Conditioner models, but they were sold under numerous brand names. You could be affected if you bought a window AC between March 2020 and May 2025 from brands like Frigidaire, Danby, Insignia, Keystone, or Perfect Aire.

These units measure 22 inches wide by 14 inches high and were sold at major retailers including Best Buy, Costco, and Home Depot for $280 to $500. The CPSC has a complete list of model numbers on their website, so grab your unit’s info and cross-reference it there.

Your next steps matter

Stop using the unit immediately. Midea offers two options: free repair or a full refund. You won’t need to haul the heavy thing back to the store. The company will send you a prepaid shipping label to return it, or you can cut the power cord, snap a photo as proof, and they’ll process your refund.

This response is generous compared to some recalls, where you’re stuck driving to a service center or getting partial credit. Take advantage quickly, though — recall participation typically drops off after the first few months, perhaps because consumers get distracted and forget to follow through.

The bigger financial picture

While Midea is covering the unit replacement, mold exposure can trigger cascading costs. If mold has already spread beyond your AC, professional remediation runs anywhere from $500 to $6,000, according to HomeGuide. That’s before potential medical bills.

Check your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. Many cover mold damage with caps around $5,000 to $10,000, according to Blanchard Insurance. Some policies exclude mold entirely unless it’s caused by a covered peril like a burst pipe. This recall situation sits in a gray area that insurers love to debate.

Building your paper trail

If you’ve noticed mold-related issues, document everything now. Photograph visible mold around the AC unit, on walls, or nearby furniture. Keep all medical records for respiratory issues. Save receipts for air quality tests, cleaning supplies, or temporary lodging if the problem forced you out.

These records become crucial for potential claims beyond just unit replacement. Product liability can cover consequential damages — the domino effect of problems caused by a defective product.

While Midea hasn’t announced coverage for additional costs, documentation positions you better if they do, or if you need other options.

Smart cooling choices going forward

This recall highlights AC maintenance that most people ignore. Window units need monthly filter cleaning and regular drainage checks. Watch for water dripping inside rather than outside, musty smells when running, or visible moisture around vents.

Consider upgrading to units with improved drainage designs or antimicrobial coil coatings. While these features may add to the initial cost, they can be cost-effective in the long run by reducing maintenance needs and improving air quality

Silver linings worth pursuing

Nobody wants a recall, but this one presents an opportunity. Your unit’s essentially getting a free upgrade or money back on a depreciated appliance. That $400 AC from 2020 would probably fetch $100 on Craigslist today, but you’re getting full retail value through this recall.

Reassess your cooling needs now. Maybe you’ve been limping along with an undersized unit that runs constantly, driving up electric bills. Or perhaps a portable AC would offer easier maintenance and drainage monitoring.

Contact Midea immediately to start the refund or repair process. The 152 mold complaints and 17 health reports underscore this isn’t just about comfort — it’s about protecting your family’s health and your finances.

Your quick action today could prevent thousands in costs tomorrow.
