Buying a new car can now get you thousands of dollars in Amazon gift cards.
Amazon recently unveiled its new Amazon Autos program, which partners with local dealerships to make the car-buying process easier for Amazon Prime members.
The program is currently offering new Hyundai cars, trucks, SUVs and electric vehicles in select metro areas — along with $2,300 in Amazon gift cards as an incentive to buy one. Amazon hopes to expand the program’s inventory and the number of participating locations soon.
How Amazon Autos works
Just like when purchasing any other product on Amazon, shoppers scroll through Amazon's listings to pick a vehicle.
Shoppers who want to pay cash can make a minimum $500 down payment through Amazon and then pay the rest at the dealership.
For shoppers looking for financing options, there’s a step-by-step process on Amazon to submit a credit application to a dealer, to which Amazon says you’ll get a response in 90 seconds or less.
There are even options for adding extended warranties and maintenance plans while checking out online.
During checkout, shoppers will select a time to pick up their vehicle from the dealership. There they will wrap up the car-buying process with an Amazon Advisor, who will also accompany them on a test drive. Then, shoppers can drive off in their new car.
Amazon Autos also welcomes trade-ins. After a shopper selects the new car of their choice and heads to the checkout screen, they can select the trade-in option and take a 20-question survey about their vehicle to receive a trade-in offer.
Amazon vs. Costco
Amazon’s entrance into the auto market appears to be a competitive move, as Costco also has an auto program that gives its members four-figure discounts on new cars.
Amazon’s current discount is steeper than that of the Costco Auto Program, which typically offers $1,000 to $2,000 off select new models. But Costco’s program offers true discounts, whereas Amazon’s current offer is essentially cash back in the form of gift cards.
The current Amazon Autos offer
Right now, Prime members have an extra sweet offer to consider. Those willing to take the leap and buy a car through Amazon’s new program can get $2,300 in Amazon gift cards.
To qualify for this offer, they must purchase a new 2024 or 2025 Hyundai model on Amazon Autos by 11:59 p.m. PT on April 15.
They’ll receive the gift cards by email within two weeks of when they pick up the car from the dealership.
