Ask an Expert: Help, I Want More Credit Card Points!

I review dozens of credit card offers each week to find the best deals. Check out more on our credit card page. Have a question? Email me.

A Money Talks News reader recently wrote me with this question:

My wife and I each have Chase Sapphire Preferred and are building a lot of [Ultimate Rewards] points. We will have had the card for a year in November, and we’ll get dividend points next year. My question is, what next? I want more points, and I’d like to find another card that I can either move my Ultimate Rewards to or move from a new card. Starwood? British Airways? Timing is important too – if I got with British Airways, I’d like to start in January to get the full point spectrum. Or I could just stand pat with the Ultimate Rewards points.

What do you think I could do next?
– Kyle

Wow, Kyle! You’re really into the points. Good for you – as long as you pay your balance in full and on time.

Although you already have the Sapphire Preferred card from Chase, which is one I recommend, Chase has several other cards that offer Ultimate Rewards points. These include the Freedom cards, Ink Bold Business Card, Ink Plus Business Card, and JPMorgan Select card.

Of these, my favorites are the Ink cards, since they offer five times the bonus points on office supplies and telecommunications services. I love to maximize this bonus by purchasing gift cards at office supply stores for use elsewhere.

I’m also a big fan of the Starwood card you mentioned. Like Ultimate Rewards points, Starpoints can be transferred to a variety of airline mileage programs. That’s why these two programs are ones anyone can use to travel in style.

As for the British Airways card from Chase, it will probably be redundant in your wallet, since you can transfer your Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways as needed. They can also be transferred to United, Southwest, and Korean Air – as well as Amtrak and several hotel chains.

So take a look at the Starwood Preferred Guest card from American Express and see if it can complement your collection of Ultimate Rewards points. If not, I’d go with the Ink Bold Business Card or Ink Plus Business Card and rake in as many Ultimate Rewards points as you can.

Tell me what you decide, Kyle – I’m curious to hear what happens.
