June is the first month of summer, bringing exciting opportunities for vacations, breaks from school, and days spent at the pool. But one activity that might not be high on many people’s lists is shopping; and if that’s the case for you, you’re missing out.
Tons of deals show up in June — you just need to know what to look for!
Check out our guide for the best buys of June, plus the things you should hold off on for now. And if you want to know when to buy those items, be sure to read up on what to buy every month of the year, so you’ll be prepared to shop when the time comes.
The 9 Best Things to Buy in June
1. Father’s Day Gifts
Father’s Day is one of the biggest holidays in June, and this year it’s on Sunday, June 19. Because of that, gifts for all kinds of dads are high on the list of the best buys of June.
Plenty of stores know fathers can be among the hardest people to shop for, so they’ll be offering June sales on a variety of items to appeal to every type of dad.
Watch for retailers like Fanatics to have thousands of gifts perfect for sports fans, and what’s even better is that select orders may come with free shipping.
Sam’s Club could bring its special offer on gift baskets back — last year it offered a themed basket for only $20. It included goodies like the following:
- Brent and Sam’s Soft & Chewy Chocolate Chunk Cookies
- Alder Creek Freeway Blend Trail Mix
- Dad’s Old Fashioned Caffeine-Free Root Beer
- Urban Accents Steakhouse Burger Blend
Be sure to think outside the box for gift ideas, too. For example, EyeBuyDirect could have another “buy one, get one free” sale for Father’s Day this year, so you could pick up shiny new sunglasses (or eyeglasses!) for both you and your dad. Or just one of each — whatever works.
2. Items to Treat Yourself
June 18 is National Splurge Day, which means it’s a prime opportunity to treat yourself. You don’t have to pay full price for whatever you splurge on, though. If you need suggestions, check out our Staff Pick deals for the “best of the best” offers available.
3. PC Games
Gamers know that June is an exciting time because it’s when Steam has its big summer sale. We’ve already seen the dates of the sale for 2022 — the Steam Summer Sale should run from June 23 through July 7 — and you can expect discounts as high as 90% off tons of titles.
They won’t be the only gaming company slashing prices, either. GOG will likely have its own sale, and we expect that event to occur earlier in the month; last year, GOG’s promotion ran from June 9-28. Just like Steam, though, GOG also knocked up to 90% off select titles during its sale.
4. Spring Clothes
If your wardrobe needs refreshing, be ready to shop spring clearance clothing this month. With summer in full swing, the previous season’s items will see deep discounts.
Retailers like Uniqlo could take up to 60% off, while Old Navy could knock up to 50% off. Count on some stores being even more generous; Aeropostale took 50% to 70% off during its sitewide sale last year.
And it’s not just clothing — we should see discounted shoes, as well.
Looking for super casual footwear? Watch for Birkenstock to take an extra 40% off during its Last Chance Sale again this year.
Lingerie can be expensive, but some retailers make it a little easier to refresh your collection. Victoria’s Secret has a summer semi-annual sale that usually happens during June, which is part of the reason why lingerie pieces are on the must-buy list for the month. Watch for discounts to be around 50% off, with prices starting at the following:
- Beauty items and underwear from $4
- Bras from $7
- Accessories from $8
- Sleepwear from $14.99
- Leggings for $35
In 2021, the summer semi-annual sale started on June 24. The retailer doesn’t vary much when it comes to dates, so the timing should be similar for 2022. This means the next semi-annual sale will likely start around June 23.
Not interested in shopping VS? Watch for other lingerie retailers to have their own sales. Historically, we’ve seen Frederick’s of Hollywood offer a decent range of discounts that are comparable to the ones at Victoria’s Secret.
6. Workout Apparel
With New Year’s resolutions often revolving around getting healthier, it’s no surprise that workout gear is super popular in January.
But what might surprise you is that we see a resurgence of deals on activewear in June, when people are gearing up for vacations and consequently trying to get into shape again. Retailers know shoppers are looking for bargains, so they drop their prices to entice them.
7. Free Fishing
If you’re into fishing, or even if you’ve just considered trying it out, this is the month to grab fishing gear and get to the water.
June 4 kicks off National Fishing and Boating Week, and one of the big perks around that time is that some states offer free fishing days or weekends. Basically, this means that you can go fishing without having to acquire a fishing license.
Check your state and local laws before heading out, but you can see the free fishing days for your state at the link.
8. Dinnerware and Cookware
June might not seem like a great time to upgrade your dinnerware or cookware, but retailers often have special deals this month because summer is the height of wedding season. And of course, these items make popular wedding gifts. So if you want to upgrade your current sets, this is a good time for it.
Single specialty pieces of cookware, like a cast iron grilling wok, could be only $22. Six-piece bakeware sets from brands like Calphalon could go for around $55, meanwhile, and 8-piece nonstick cookware sets could cost $60.
9. In-Season Fruits and Veggies
You can always find seasonal fruits and veggies, but summertime is when the selection is at its most robust.
June is especially big for fruits, so if you want tasty smoothie additions or to get into grilled fruit, you should have plenty to choose from. Apricots, blueberries, cantaloupe, cherries, kiwi, mangoes, peaches, strawberries, and watermelon will all be at their peak, which means they should make sweet additions to your summer fare.
And if you’re on the lookout for the best veggies, be ready to add corn, lettuce, Swiss chard, and zucchini to your grocery list.
