BMW is recalling more than 27,000 vehicles in the United States because a defect involving the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential could increase the risk of a crash.
According to a recall notice posted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the connection may experience excessive wear over time. In rare cases, the issue could lead to a loss of power to the rear wheels.
The agency said the defect could increase the risk of a crash. If the vehicle is not secured by the parking brake, it could also roll away.
BMW Models Included in the Recall
According to the NHTSA, 27,720 vehicles are potentially affected:
- 2022-2026 BMW 840i and 840i xDrive: 7,372 vehicles
- 2024-2026 BMW 750e xDrive: 2,198 vehicles
- 2021-2023 BMW 540i, 540i xDrive and M550i xDrive: 18,150 vehicles
What BMW Owners Should Do
Owners should take their vehicle to an authorized BMW dealership for a free inspection.
Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential. If necessary, technicians will apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential at no cost.
Dealer notifications began Aug. 12. Owner notification letters are scheduled to be mailed beginning Oct. 2.
Owners who paid to have the issue repaired before receiving the recall notice may be eligible for reimbursement under BMW’s reimbursement plan. Consumers with questions can contact their local authorized BMW dealer or BMW customer service.
