Mobile Passport Control (MPC) is a free app provided by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that can make returning to the U.S. faster and more efficient.

For travelers who don’t want to pay for Global Entry, this app is an easy-to-use alternative that requires no background checks or pre- approval process.

How Mobile Passport Control Works

MPC allows U.S. citizens and lawful residents to digitally submit their passport information and customs declarations through their smartphone. By completing these steps before arriving at customs, travelers can skip filling out paper forms or waiting in standard entry lines.

The app works at select U.S. airports, seaports, and pre-clearance locations, making re-entry more seamless for many travelers.

Mobile Passport Control vs. Global Entry

While both Mobile Passport Control and Global Entry expedite the customs process, there are significant differences:

  1. Cost and Requirements: Global Entry requires a $120 fee, a thorough background check, and an in-person interview. MPC, on the other hand, is free and doesn’t require an application or interview.
  2. Availability: Global Entry is available at more entry points and generally has dedicated kiosks and expedited lanes. Mobile Passport Control, while effective, is available at fewer locations and may not always have designated lines.
  3. Speed and Convenience: Global Entry members typically receive faster service due to more widespread infrastructure. However, in some cases, travelers using MPC may find shorter lines or comparable processing times, especially during peak travel periods.

Pros of Mobile Passport Control

  • Free and easy to use: No need for an application or approval process.
  • Multiple profiles: Users can add up to 12 family members under one account, simplifying group travel.
  • Paperless entry: Skip the hassle of filling out forms upon arrival.

Cons of Mobile Passport Control

  • Limited locations: Not as widely available as Global Entry.
  • Dependent on Wi-Fi or data: You need an internet connection to submit your customs declaration.
  • Fewer dedicated lanes: May result in longer wait times if no separate line is available.

Maximize Your Re-entry Experience

Mobile Passport Control is a great tool for faster customs clearance if you’re an infrequent traveler or just want a budget-friendly option. Global Entry might be worth the investment for those who travel internationally more often and prefer guaranteed expedited service.

Choosing between these options depends on how frequently you travel and whether you’re willing to pay for extra convenience.
