TechCrunch, citing anonymous sources, says Google is working on Google Shopping Express.
The service would be $64 or $69 a year (Amazon Prime is $79, which currently includes free two-day shipping and $3.99 one-day shipping) and “offer same-day delivery from brick-and-mortar stores like Target, Walmart, Walgreens and Safeway (though no specifics were mentioned by our sources).”
It’s being put together by Google’s e-commerce product manager Tom Fallows and the company hopes it will unify and popularize other services like Google Wallet (a mobile payment system) and Google Shopping.
TechCrunch points to some of Google’s recent acquisitions, including a Canada-based shipping company called BufferBox and one that developed an online shopping platform called Channel Intelligence, as evidence they’re serious about this and not just experimenting. They think Google is already testing it out within the company.
