Now You Can Send Text Messages Even Without a Cell Signal

Apple released its iOS 18 software update in September. Most iPhone models from the past few years can support it, although they may not have every feature that the latest iPhone models will.

One feature of the iOS 18 update that’s available in the U.S. and Canada for users of iPhone 14 models and newer is the ability to send messages via satellite — no Wi-Fi or cellular connection necessary.

You may remember the Emergency SOS calling feature from your past and current iPhone. Apple applied similar technology to create satellite texting, and you don’t need to experience an emergency to make use of it.

The best part is that there are no additional charges for using it.

So, how do you use it?

When an iPhone detects that it’s out of Wi-Fi or cellular range, it alerts the user with a prompt that offers access to satellite-enabled services.

These services include roadside assistance, Apple’s Find My feature and Messages. The iOS will also provide on-screen guidance for users in the Messages app that directs them toward the nearest available satellite.

Don’t leave yourself stuck if an emergency strikes. Apple has a demo for establishing satellite connections and sending messages. Follow these steps to go through the demo:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down, tap “Apps,” then “Messages”
  3. Scroll down and tap “Satellite Connection Demo”

As with normal messaging, iMessages sent via satellite are end-to-end encrypted — in other words, only the sender and receiver can see the contents of the message, not the cellular provider or anyone else.

There is one way in which satellite messages are limited, though. Only emergency contacts and designated family members can send you messages when your iPhone is using a satellite connection. You can contact anyone, but you, as the iPhone user, have to send the first satellite message for the conversation to connect and allow responses.
