The Social Security Administration says it is now faster and more convenient to apply for a replacement Social Security card or an original Social Security number.
With this process, you start by visiting the SSA’s Social Security number and card page. At this point, the SSA will ask you a few questions in an attempt to steer you to the best way to apply.
This could include completing an application online or starting an application and finishing the process at your local Social Security office. It’s also possible to begin and end the entire process at a local office.
If you plan to begin the process online and finish it at a local Social Security office, it will be important to determine which documents you must bring with you. All documents must be originals or certified copies.
When you arrive at the office, look for the kiosk where you can use a mobile check-in process. You can do this by scanning a QR code with your phone.
After check-in, you will meet with an SSA employee who will verify your information and review your documents.
The SSA notes that starting the process online should result in a shorter in-office visit. In addition, the agency says it has expanded appointment-based services in hopes of better serving those who need help with Social Security matters.
The entire process of applying for and receiving a card typically takes no more than 14 business days.
If you need to schedule an appointment at a local office, you can do so online or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
