‘It’s Not All Doomsday,’ Says Brookings Institution — Which Means Some of It Is. Your Kids Face a Brave New Career World With AI Impacting Every Move

The job market your children face looks nothing like the one that shaped your early career.

Companies are cutting entry-level roles at scale, with postings down 35% from January 2023 to June 2025, according to labor research firm Revelio Labs. AI now handles tasks that once helped young workers learn on the job. That change is reshaping both career possibilities and long-term financial security.

The familiar path from entry-level to expert is breaking. When the first rung disappears, everything above it becomes harder.

Brookings Institution senior fellow Molly Kinder tries to soften the blow. “It’s not all doomsday,” she said, pointing to World Economic Forum data showing that AI and related technologies could create about 11 million jobs and displace about 9 million.

The hidden cost of AI efficiency

AI delivers savings, speed and consistency for employers. Matt Beane of the University of California, Santa Barbara, explains that when AI replaces work traditionally done by novices, it removes the practice ground that builds real skill.

Without that early practice, young workers struggle to gain experience and end up stuck in lower-paying roles. They also lose the informal learning that happens by watching experts, fixing mistakes and building judgment.

Those gaps slow career progress and make it harder to reach the higher-earning levels that earlier generations reached through steady advancement.

Skills young workers need to embrace

AI is wiping out the starter tasks that once helped young workers gain early experience. That means they can no longer rely on the traditional entry-level path to build judgment.

The most valuable competitive skill is practical AI fluency. Young workers do not need to be programmers. They need to know how to use AI effectively on real tasks because employers now expect that ability from day one.

Lightcast reports a 9-fold increase in postings for non-tech jobs requiring generative AI skills from 2022 to 2024. Employers want people who can combine human thinking with AI-driven speed.

Working with AI directly gives young workers the exposure they no longer get from early job roles. Testing AI on real projects, small assignments or personal work builds problem-solving skills, judgment and adaptability.

These strengths help them qualify for roles that rely on human oversight, communication or empathy, where AI supports the work rather than replaces it. The advantage goes to workers who understand how people and AI fit together.

Financial planning for a disrupted path

A career built on volatility needs a different financial plan. Diversifying income early helps cushion unpredictable stretches. Freelance projects, part-time consulting or short-term contract work can provide stability when traditional career steps falter. FlexJobs lets you browse and apply to verified jobs around the corner and around the world.

Emergency funds need to be larger. With fewer guaranteed transitions, saving nine to twelve months of expenses offers better protection than the old three to six. That cushion gives room to reskill, change direction or ride out longer job searches.

People of any age can build emergency savings by opening a better bank account. SoFi offers a combination checking-and-savings account, and if the account-holder sets up direct deposit, they can earn a competitive APY on their savings. (Can change without notice.) New members who set up direct deposit can also get a cash bonus.

Earn up to 4.40% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on one SoFi Savings account with a 1.10% APY Boost (added to the 3.30% APY as of 10/20/26) for up to 6 months. Open your first SoFi Checking and Savings account between 10/20/26 and 12/31/27, then within 60 days of account opening receive an eligible direct deposit OR $5,000 or more in qualifying deposits. You must maintain eligible direct deposit or $5,000 in qualifying deposits every 31 days to keep the Boost, for up to 6 months. Rates variable, subject to change.

Terms apply at sofi.com/banking. SoFi Bank, N.A. Member FDIC.

Investments should favor liquidity. Young workers may need access to capital to support retraining, relocation or new opportunities. Flexible, low-fee investments matter more than locking money into hard-to-access assets early.

Preparing your children for a brave new career world

Your children are entering a career world with fewer entry-level jobs and far less stability. They need tools that match the reality they will face, not the one you remember.

Molly Kinder is right that it is not all doom and gloom. There will be new opportunities, but the disruption is real. AI is creating a divide, and the workers who have AI skills will surely outperform those who do not.
