Amid a sweltering heatwave across the country, more than 13,000 AC units have been recalled for posing burn and fire hazards.
Daikin Comfort Technologies Manufacturing issued a recall on June 25 for 13,514 Amana air conditioning units and heating pumps, as the devices’ heating elements can remain energized even when turned off, posing a fire or burn risk, according to a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission report. As of June 25, no injuries had been reported in relation to the recalled products, but Daikin was aware of one report of a unit’s plastic melting.
The recall was announced just before a long, dangerous heatwave began to intensify through much of the central and eastern United States. About two-thirds of the U.S. population is expected to be exposed to the extreme heat this Fourth of July weekend, according to Weather.com.
What AC Units Are Recalled?
The recall affects select Amana Window-Room-Air Conditioning and Through-the-Wall air conditioning units or heat pumps.
The products are white, and the brand name is printed on most units’ control covers, with the model number located on the front edge of the units’ base plate via a white sticker, according to the recall report. The units are most often used in apartment buildings, commercial spaces and hotels.
