Nearly 48,000 Nissan Vehicles Recalled. See the Affected Model

Nissan is voluntarily recalling nearly 48,000 vehicles over a possible defect with the driver air bag that could increase the risk of injury during a crash.

According to a notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Nissan North America, Inc. discovered that the “driver’s airbag inflator on certain Nissan Cube vehicles may contain an improper body weld seal to the inflator base.”

As a result of the “improper weld,” the air bag module may detach from the steering wheel and could strike the driver or other occupants during air bag deployment.

The defect is specific to 2009–2010 Nissan Cube vehicles, which were equipped with Takata PSDI-X driver’s air bag inflators. No other Nissan or INFINITI vehicles are equipped with this inflator.

Which Nissan Model Was Affected by This Recall?

Nissan Cube models manufactured between October 2008 and September 2010 were “potentially” involved in this recall. The total number of affected 2009–2010 Nissan Cube models is 47,928.

What Affected Vehicle Owners Should Do

Affected vehicle owners will be instructed to take their vehicles to a Nissan dealer, where dealers will “inspect the front air bag inflator serial number, and replace the inflator as necessary, free of charge.”

Vehicle identification numbers associated with the recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov starting April 23. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed out May 27.

Owners may also reach out to Nissan’s customer service team by calling 800-647-7261, or contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY 888-275-9171).
