Aldi has more than 2,400 stores across the nation, and there will soon be more.
However, this affordable shopping destination wasn’t always so expansive.
The Albrecht family founded the world’s first discount grocery store in Germany in 1961. The first Aldi to open in America was located in Iowa and began business in 1976.
The company has continued to expand, even purchasing Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket at one point. Aldi later sold those brands but is continuing to convert some of the old locations from those chains to Aldi stores.
Aldi recently announced a plan to open more than 225 stores in 2025, a number of them emerging from the former Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets locations. Aldi says the new stores will mark the largest number of locations the chain has opened in a single year since the company’s inception.
While Aldi’s announcement didn’t detail which stores will go through the transformation, the company website details some locations shoppers can expect to open in 2025. As of early May, they are spread across 14 states and Washington, D.C., with locations in 11 of those states set to have grand openings this month.
