This Is the Worst Place to Get an Oil Change, According to Customers

Walmart may have placed first again on this year’s Fortune 500 list, but when it comes to customer satisfaction with quick oil changes, it came in last.

That’s according to J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Aftermarket Service Index Study, for which over 10,000 vehicle owners were polled about the following aspects of oil change services:

  • Ease of scheduling/getting vehicle in for service
  • Fairness of charges
  • Service advisor courtesy
  • Service advisor performance
  • Service facility
  • Time to complete service
  • Quality of work

The average customer satisfaction score among all the oil change providers included in this year’s study saw an uptick of 17 points.

The company with the highest satisfaction score for quick oil changes — for the third year in a row — was Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers, which earned 845 points on a 1,000-point scale.

Walmart came in last with a score of 783 points. That may be a surprise, considering how large the retailer is. However, you may not even have known that Walmart has a quick oil change service.

The company’s website says it’ll service your vehicle while you shop, with packages starting at $26.88. The most basic package includes up to 5 quarts of conventional oil and chassis lubrication, where applicable.

The priciest oil change package currently listed on Walmart’s site is $58.88. It includes:

  • Battery performance check
  • Air filter check
  • Wiper blade check
  • Lights check
  • Transmission fluid check
  • Washer fluid check and fill
  • Power steering fluid check
  • Differential fluid check
  • Tire pressure check and fill
  • Windshield wash exterior

But with Walmart offering so many services in one package, who has them beat? Multiple franchises.

“Compared with aftermarket providers, franchised dealerships continue to garner higher levels of customer trust for the use of technology to make service more efficient — and the gap has become more pronounced during the past year,” J.D. Power’s report says.

It also states that charging stations for phones and computers are one of “the most appreciated service facility amenities” and providing them has “the greatest effect on service facility satisfaction among quick oil change customers.”

The rest of the companies included in J.D. Power’s 2025 study that beat the average score of 814 out of 1,000 points for customer satisfaction with quick oil changes are:

  • Take 5: 826
  • Jiffy Lube: 819
  • Valvoline Instant Oil Change: 816

The only other ranked company that earned a below-average score, besides Walmart, was Grease Monkey, which had a score of 796.

Express Oil Change & Tire Engineers — the top-ranked company on this list — offers signature 10-minute quick oil changes, which include a free 20-point courtesy inspection. That’s double what Walmart includes in its checks. The chain has around 400 locations in 19 states.
