Pet Supplements Sold on Chewy, Amazon Recalled: See Affected Products

USA TODAY Network / Reuters

A pet company is recalling two lots of dog supplements that may be contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that can make pets and people sick.

Fi issued a voluntary recall for two dietary supplements after a Sept. 8 notice from the Food and Drug Administration. No illnesses have been reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

People can become infected through contact with contaminated supplements or surfaces they touched. Adults 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of severe illness.

Which Dog Supplements Were Recalled?

The recalled products were sold directly by Fi and through Amazon and Chewy.com:

  • Fi Calming Supplement for Dogs, 180 grams; lot 26118; UPC 8 50064 80011 1
  • Fi 8-in-1 Formula Supplement for Dogs, 180 grams; lot 26159; UPC 8 50055 11168 4

What to Do With Recalled Dog Supplements

Stop using either product immediately. Before throwing the supplements away, seal the container tightly as recommended by the FDA.

For questions, contact Fi at 1-888-434-3647 or [email protected]. To report an adverse effect, complete FDA Form 1932a through the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine Adverse Event Reporting program at fda.gov/reportanimalae.

Salmonella Symptoms in People and Pets

In people, symptoms may include:

  • Bloody diarrhea or diarrhea lasting more than three days
  • Diarrhea with a fever above 102 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Severe vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down
  • Dehydration, including dry mouth, infrequent urination or dizziness when standing
  • Stomach cramps

Symptoms commonly appear six hours to six days after exposure. Most people recover in four to seven days, but severe symptoms may require medical treatment or hospitalization.

Infected pets may carry salmonella even when they appear healthy. Contact a veterinarian if your dog consumed either recalled product, even if it shows no symptoms. Warning signs include lethargy, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite and abdominal pain.
