As summer winds to a close, flu season is on the way. The best way to keep this illness at bay is to get a flu shot.

And if staying healthy is not enough motivation to roll up your sleeve, how about a freebie or discount?

Several retail chains offer rewards for people who get flu shots at their locations. Currently, they include the following retailers.

Typically, flu shots are free with most insurance plans. So, if you have insurance, you likely can claim a flu-fighting reward when you get your shot from these chains without spending a dime. But make sure to confirm that with your insurer first.

Target

Get your flu shot at a CVS Pharmacy, Longs Drugs or MinuteClinic that is based inside a Target store and you will get a $5 coupon good for your next Target purchase. The deal is available until Oct. 31, while supplies last.

Target has locations across the country. However, the coupon is not available in all states. According to the fine print, that includes:

  • Pharmacy locations in Arkansas, New Jersey and New York
  • MinuteClinic locations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island

CVS Pharmacy

Prefer shopping at CVS? Go straight to the source. Get a flu shot at a CVS Pharmacy or Longs Drugs location, and you’ll get a coupon good for $5 off a purchase of $20 at CVS or Longs.

This deal also is available until Oct. 31, while supplies last.

While CVS has stores across the country, this offer is not available in some states, including at:

  • Any locations in Arkansas, New Jersey and New York
  • MinuteClinic locations in Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island

Publix

If you live near a Publix grocery, you can get what might be the best deal for receiving a flu shot: a free $10 Publix gift card.

But don’t delay — Publix says the offer is good only for a “limited time.”

Publix has stores in several states in the Southeast.

Walgreens

Get your flu shot at Walgreens through Sept. 12, and the retailer will give you a free coupon good for $5 off your next $15 purchase.

Walgreens has locations across the country, but the fine print states that the offer is not valid in Arkansas, New Jersey or New York.
