3 Signs That Car Shoppers Now Have the Upper Hand in This Market

After years of empty dealer lots, limited choices and prices that kept climbing, car buyers finally have reason to smile. Industry data shows the market has shifted decisively in favor of consumers.

According to both Kelley Blue Book and CarEdge, there are clear indicators that point to a buyer’s market. Here’s what to know before you head to the dealer.

Dealer lots are filling up again

The first sign shoppers have gained leverage is that inventory is climbing to levels not seen in years.

Used car availability has reached its highest point of 2025, with roughly 2.3 million vehicles now on dealer lots nationwide. That translates to a 48-day supply — meaning dealers would need about seven weeks to sell their current stock at typical sales rates.

New car inventory tells a similar story. Dealers are sitting on approximately 2.9 million new vehicles, representing an 84-day supply. That’s up nearly 5% from the previous month and marks the strongest inventory position since early in the year.

What does this mean for buyers? When dealers have cars to move, they need to negotiate. The pressure to clear space for incoming inventory gives you more bargaining power than you’d have had even a few months ago.

Financing is improving

The second sign of a buyer’s market shows up in the deals themselves. Aggressive incentives have returned in a big way.

According to CarEdge, 29 different vehicle models now feature 0% financing offers.

These aren’t just on forgotten models. Popular trucks like the Chevy Silverado 1500 and family-friendly SUVs like the Hyundai Tucson qualify for interest-free loans.

Lease deals have improved dramatically too. Ford dealers are advertising multiple vehicles available with just the first month’s payment due at signing. Dozens of new cars can be leased for under $250 monthly with less than $3,500 down.

According to Kelley Blue Book, loan conditions have improved recently, as lenders are approving loans with lower down payments and showing flexibility with loan terms.

The calendar is working in your favor

Perhaps the most powerful factor tilting the market toward buyers is simple: the approaching new year.

Dealers across the country are holding roughly 900,000 vehicles from the 2025 model year. Once January arrives, every one of those cars instantly becomes “last year’s model” and takes a depreciation hit. No dealer wants to start 2026 with dozens of 2025 vehicles gathering dust on the lot.

This creates urgency on the dealer’s side of the negotiating table. They need to move these cars now, and they’re willing to offer aggressive discounts to make that happen. For smart shoppers, this represents one of the best buying opportunities of the year.

If you end up buying a new ride, make sure to shop around for car insurance. Comparing rates is quick and easy with FinanceBuzz’ online comparison tool .
