Though the pandemic has disrupted the workplace, the bright note is that it has increased access to remote jobs across many career fields.

More than half of companies have hired new staff remotely during the pandemic. And U.S. Census Bureau data finds that in major metro areas such as San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Seattle, more than half of the labor force is working from home.

That said, remote work is growing more quickly in some fields than in others. With that in mind, we analyzed the more than 50 career categories in our database, comparing the number of remote jobs posted in March 2020 versus December 2020 to determine the 10 fastest-growing remote career categories.

Quick Tips for Applying to Remote Jobs

To help you in your remote job search, the FlexJobs Career Coaching team recommends creating a customized cover letter and tailored resume that highlights your remote work experience.

Even if you’ve never worked in a remote position before, you likely have remote work experience. For example, if you’ve worked with co-workers in an office in another part of the state or a different time zone, that counts as remote work experience. Working from home a few times, earning a degree or certification online, or virtual volunteering can also be considered remote work experience.

To highlight your remote work experience and talents on your resume, follow these three tips!

1. State It Clearly

If you have specific remote work experience, make sure you call it out on your resume. For example, list “remote work” next to your job title. For example, “Director of Marketing (100% Remote Work).”

2. Describe It

Include your remote work experience in your job descriptions. If you have experience with remote work, be clear about it. For instance, “Led a team of five customer service reps in a completely remote work environment and successfully earned an average team satisfaction rating of 94%.”

If you haven’t worked for a remote company, you can still describe your remote work experience in your job duties. For instance, “Coordinated project meetings with co-workers in three different time zones.”

3. Talk Up Your Skills

Make sure you talk about the types of skills it takes to be a successful remote worker in your skills section. Some examples of desired remote work skills include:

  • Time and task management
  • Communication
  • Self-management
  • The ability to work independently
  • Comfort with technology
