If you have children — or grandchildren — you probably know all about Toys R Us. After all, this store is a veritable Santa’s workshop full of games, electronics and other toys.
The retailer has been in the news because it recently filed for bankruptcy. But the store is not going anywhere soon, and it remains a go-to destination for kids and their families.
Even if you frequent Toys R Us, you might not be familiar with the many ways you can save on action figures, building blocks, dolls, video games and other popular purchases.
Simply planning your purchases carefully — or signing up for the right program — can net you big savings on any future Toys R Us hauls. Following are eight ways to cut the cost of shopping at Toys R Us.
Join Rewards R Us

Join the Toys R Us rewards program — Rewards “R” Us— and for every 125 points you earn, you’ll get a $5 credit good for merchandise. You earn one point for every dollar you spend at both Toys R Us and Babies R Us.
Sign up your child for Geoffrey’s Birthday Club

Members of Geoffrey’s Birthday Club celebrate their special day with:
- A birthday card and gift every year up to age 10
- A phone call from Geoffrey the giraffe, the retailer’s official spokesanimal
- In-store recognition in the form of a birthday crown and store-wide announcement
- A coupon for a free Lego toy
Rewards “R” Us membership is required to join the birthday club.
Open an ‘R’ Us credit card

When you open an “R” Us credit card account, you get double the points for each dollar you spend at Toys R Us. You’ll also get a point for each dollar you spend using the card outside the store.
But that’s not all! Once your account is approved, you’ll get 15 percent off your first purchase, and special financing offers for future purchases.
Take advantage of price matching

Toys R Us pledges to match the price of other retailers. According to the store:
Simply come in store and show us the same item in a competitor’s printed ad, selected online retailer’s website or our website.
The Toys R Us website has a list of retailers it matches. The price match policy applies to in-store purchases and is valid up to seven days after you make your Toys R Us purchase.
Spend enough to get free shipping

Shipping is free when you purchase at least $29 worth of goods. So, if you plan to buy less-expensive items, try to group your purchases together at one time when shopping at Toys R Us.
Check out the Today’s Deals, Clearance and Coupons pages

For even bigger savings, check out three pages on the Toys R Us website that highlight the latest deals:
- Today’s Deals. Here, you’ll find the week’s best deals and promotions broken down by category.
- Clearance. We recently saw Bratz dolls two-packs slashed from $34.99 to $5.98, and Disney Princess Ariel lip gloss marked down from $6.99 to $1.98.
- Coupons. Here, you’ll find the latest printable Toys R Us coupons.
Shop through a cash back site

Next time you plan an online purchase at Toys R Us, make sure you stop by a cash-back site — such as Ebates or TopCashback — first. These sites allow you to grab additional savings every time you order something from Toys R Us. For example, shopping through Ebates typically nets you 1 percent back on Toys R Us purchases. Meanwhile, TopCashback offers 2 percent back on purchases made at the retail giant.
Purchase discounted gift cards

Another way to save on all your Toys R Us purchases is to buy discounted gift cards from websites such as Raise and Cardpool.
Recently, Raise offered Toys R Us gift cards at a discount of up to 6 percent. Such cards were out of stock at Cardpool, a testimony to just how popular Toys R Us is with kids everywhere.
