Finding a perfect Airbnb at a great price is the stuff of travel dreams. But discovering the fees that come with the rental can be a nightmare.

Many Airbnb hosts tack on a slew of extra costs — including cleaning fees, service charges and taxes — that can make a bargain rental look a lot less appealing.

Recently, Forbes Advisor looked at 32,000 listings in the 100 most popular Airbnb markets and discovered that, on average, fees tack on an additional 36% to the bill when you rent an Airbnb.

In some cities, the situation is even worse. Following are the places with the highest Airbnb fees for travelers this summer.

1. Atlanta

Average total Airbnb fees in this market: 48%

Average Airbnb rate in this market: $192 per night

In many ways, Atlanta remains the flagship of the South. It’s a happening place that people want to visit, but you will pay up for that privilege if you rent an Airbnb.

2. Phoenix

Average Airbnb rate in this market: $202 per night

As Atlanta dominates the South, Phoenix is at the heart of the American Southwest. People from all over the country flock here in the winter, and apparently even in the summer they pay a pretty penny in fees when they rent an Airbnb.

3. Fort Myers Beach, Florida

Like Phoenix, Fort Myers Beach draws legions of tourists in the winter. And it will likely remain that way despite the high fees you pay to rent an Airbnb — even in the heat of summer.
