Median household wealth in the U.S. in 2021 was $166,900. With one exception, this year’s presidential and vice presidential contenders are doing quite a bit better than that.
Three of the four people on the Democrat and Republican tickets for the White House are millionaires — or in the case of one of them, a billionaire.
Here is how the net worth of each candidate stacks up, starting with the billionaire and ending with the candidate whose net worth is downright ordinary.
Donald Trump

Estimated net worth: Roughly $5 billion
Donald Trump is far and away the richest of this year’s candidates. The current Republican nominee for president already served one term in the White House, which also makes him the wealthiest person to ever hold the title of president of the United States.
Trump famously made his fortune in real estate, and then grew his net worth as a celebrity. He owns golf courses and a winery and was the star of the TV reality show “The Apprentice.”
More recently, he started his own social media app, Truth Social.
JD Vance

Estimated net worth: $4 million to $10.4 million
Ohio Sen. JD Vance — the Republican nominee for vice president — is a multimillionaire who owns multiple real estate properties and other assets, including gold and cryptocurrency.
Vance is a former venture-capital investor who has a stake in at least 100 companies, according to The Wall Street Journal. Vance grew up poor and recounts his path to success in his memoir Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. He still earns royalties from the book.
Kamala Harris

Estimated net worth: $3.6 million to $7.36 million
The Democratic nominee for president — Vice President Kamala Harris — has quietly moved into the ranks of millionaires. The number above is from 2018, so it’s likely she’s even wealthier today.
Harris appears to have built her net worth in a slow and steady fashion. She prefers to invest in index funds, according to The Wall Street Journal. Much of her wealth sits in retirement accounts. Harris also has written a memoir — The Truths We Hold: An American Journey — from which she earns royalties.
Doug Emhoff, who is Harris’s husband, once earned $1.2 million in partnership income as a partner at the corporate law firm DLA Piper.
Tim Walz

Estimated net worth: $112,000 to $330,000
Tim Walz — the Democratic nominee for vice president — is the odd person out on this list. His net worth represents just a sliver of what everyone else above has earned.
Walz does not own a single stock, according to a spokesperson. The former teacher and current governor of Minnesota instead has most of his assets tied up in pensions, whole life insurance and college savings, according to the WSJ.
