Customers are unhappy about their utility bills. In fact, they are more worried about that expense than they are about their tax bill, according to J.D. Power’s latest annual Gas Utility Residential Customer Satisfaction Study.

J.D. Power conducted nearly 61,000 online interviews of customers of the 85 largest gas utility brands in the United States.

Survey respondents also were asked to name the most important issues facing them and their families. In order of importance, they said:

  • The economy and jobs
  • Energy prices
  • Taxes and government spending

Worries about energy costs appear to be taking a toll on gas customer satisfaction, which declined 10 points this year to 740 on a 1,000-point scale. J.D. Power notes that most of this deterioration was due to a 24-point plunge in price satisfaction.

However, some utilities earned higher residential customer satisfaction scores. Here are the big winners in the East, Midwest, South and West.
