The Best Way to Cook Bacon? Americans Have a Clear Favorite

Bacon is a breakfast staple. And Americans have very particular ideas about how it should be cooked.

Recently, Smithfield Culinary surveyed 2,000 adults in the U.S. who eat out or order takeout at least two or three times per month, and who eat pork at least every few months.

The survey asked these Americans to offer their opinion on the best way to cook bacon. Here is what they said.

1. Crispy

Survey respondents who said they prefer their bacon cooked this way: 52%

Bacon is one of the oldest processed meats in the world. The Chinese began to cook salted pork bellies more than 3,000 years ago.

2. Medium

During World War II, saving bacon fat was the patriotic thing to do. The fat and other meat drippings were used to make glycerol, also called glycerin, a key component in bombs.

3. Well-done or charred

Bacon and eggs go together like ducks and water. But the decision to pair the breakfast fixtures began as a public relations scheme designed to boost bacon sales in the 1920s. Clearly, it worked.

The least popular ways to eat bacon

These are the least popular ways to eat bacon based, on the percentage of survey respondents who prefer their bacon this way:

  • Lightly cooked: 8%
  • Deep-fried: 5%
  • Raw: 1%
