Have you ever delayed a system update on your computer because you were too busy to deal with it? After all, you had about 86 tabs open in six different browsers, and you’d have to log in to every single one of your essential programs again. So, you ignored the reality that your programs were slowly getting outdated, and everything was chugging along slower and slower and slower.

We’ve all been there. The system update pop-up keeps appearing. The problem is that, eventually, all those delays catch up with full-on system lockup. Everything freezes, and you must conduct a system reset before moving forward.

In many ways, the modern workforce is like that outdated computer system — plugging along without any updates until, suddenly, it can’t be ignored any longer. A massive reset was needed, and while it was a long time coming, the global pandemic finally pushed that neglected “update” button. Now, we’re in the middle of The Great Reset and it’s influencing a number of changes in the workforce.

Admittedly, this much change can feel a bit uncomfortable at times. There are underlying concerns about what didn’t get saved and quiet worries about what the new system will look like. On the other hand, the old system is getting a complete overhaul. Below, we boil down five key ways The Great Reset is changing the remote job market.

1. The Great Resignation

More than just a buzzword, The Great Resignation is a trend that’s emphasizing the growing demand for a better work-life balance. While the COVID-19 pandemic brought the shift into focus, it’s actually been happening quietly behind the scenes for a while. It serves as a notification; a reminder to companies that job stability, flexibility, and meaningful work aren’t just optional features — they’re vital for optimal performance and to attract and retain top talent.

Professionals are seeking jobs that provide the flexibility they need for their personal well-being, considering whether their skills are being utilized to their full potential, and looking for fulfillment in their work. When they don’t feel like their needs are being met, they set out in search of a better fit.

Ask yourself:

  • How is this trend affecting my remote and flexible work options?
  • Are opportunities to build the work-life balance I need available now that weren’t before?

2. The Great Retirement

Skilled professionals are leaving the workforce in massive waves as the baby boomer generation ages into retirement. We knew it was coming, but the reality highlights the shift in worker expectations.

An average of 10,000 baby boomers are turning 65 every day, and the entire generation will have passed that retirement milestone by 2030. With baby boomers making up 25% of the workforce, this is causing ripple effects in every industry.

With this transition, massive opportunities are opening up as roles traditionally held later in a career must be filled with less-tenured professionals.

Ask yourself:

  • How can I fill the gaps created by large numbers of retirees?
  • Are there promotions that might be within reach that I hadn’t considered?

3. The Great Reshuffle

During the pandemic, many professionals reskilled, switched industries, or changed careers altogether. As a result, many industries were left scrambling for workers, making room for reskilled workers to find jobs in fields they were more interested in.

In the face of this reshuffle, now is the time to take charge of and steer your career in the direction you want. Consider it an opportunity to reevaluate your skill set, understand the demands of the digital age, and plot a new career path.

This change may take a little getting used to, but it’s paving the way for a more dynamic, adaptable, and future-ready workforce.

Ask yourself:

  • How is this reshuffle impacting my remote and flexible work possibilities?
  • Is this reshuffle opening up previously unavailable career paths to explore, or is it revealing a need for reskilling?

4. The Great Refusal

The rise in remote work has made it easier for employees to refuse to settle for less than they deserve. Workers can now compare job offers globally and choose the one that best suits their needs and values.

According to research, the minimum wage quit keeping pace with inflation several decades ago. The Great Refusal has brought about a significant shift in workers setting boundaries on what they’re willing to compromise on.

Companies are being forced to reconsider the conditions they provide for their team members, along with the compensation they offer in exchange.

Ask yourself:

  • How does The Great Refusal impact my remote work situation?
  • Am I inspired to reevaluate my current job’s benefits or seek better conditions?

5. The Great Relocation

Perhaps the most significant of the five Great R’s, The Great Relocation has impacted the workforce in multiple ways. With the rise of remote and flexible work, employees are no longer restricted to living within commuting distance of their employers.

Employees can move away from expensive, congested areas, and they’re often able to choose locations that weren’t previously an option due to commutes. Not only is this opening up the workforce to more competition, but there’s also massive potential to improve rural communities and economies as more workers choose to move into less expensive living arrangements.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my current location enhance my quality of life?
  • Could I explore living in a place I’ve always dreamed of now that remote work is more accessible?
