If you like to bike, saddle up and pedal your way to one of a half-dozen places in the U.S. where homes are affordable.
Recently, Realtor.com looked at “bikeability” data from Local Logic for every U.S. city. The data rates cities based on their bicycle infrastructure and calm streets, as well as how many destinations can be reached by bike.
Here are the best bike-friendly cities for cyclists looking for homes that are priced at or well below $439,950, which was the median list price nationwide in July 2024. After we highlight the affordable options, we’ll share some pricier cities which are also good choices for biking enthusiasts.
East Lansing, Michigan
Median list price for homes in this city: $325,000
East Lansing features the Lansing River Trail, with more than 17 miles of pavement that stretches from Old Town on the city’s north side through downtown. You can even take a branch of the trail to the Michigan State University campus.
Bikers will also find a 4-mile loop of mountain bike trails in Anderson Park.
Lake Orion, Michigan
Median list price for homes in this city: $440,000
Lake Orion is part of Orion Township, which offers around 50 miles of trails and paths. Favorites include the Polly Ann Trail and the Paint Creek Trail.
Channahon, Illinois
Median list price for homes in this city: $397,900
Channahon marks the start of the 40-mile Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail, often known as the I & M Canal.
The canal once served as part of a transportation corridor linking Lake Michigan to the Gulf of Mexico.
Trenton, New Jersey
Median list price for homes in this city: $242,450
Several regional and national bike trails wind through Trenton, New Jersey’s capital. Over the past 10 years, Trenton has made additional strides toward becoming a more bikeable city.
Those efforts continue, with the city weighing additional bicycle facilities and bike-friendly design changes to streets.
Maplewood, Minnesota
Median list price for homes in this city: $299,950
The Bruce Vento Regional Trail‘s 7.5 miles stretch through forested straightaways in Maplewood, a suburb of state capital St. Paul, ending in the Lowertown area of that city’s downtown.
The Gateway State Trail, which also runs through Maplewood, gives bikers 18 miles of paved trail.
Oregon, Ohio
Median list price for homes in this city: $314,900
Oregon, Ohio, has more than 10 miles of bike trails, and an additional 5 miles are under development. You can ride through a state park, a city recreation area and a lakefront park.
Cities that are bikeable but pricey
Realtor.com also identified other cities that are good destinations for bikers. But in these places, median home prices are anything but modest:
- Atlantic Beach, Florida: $1.19 million
- Cambridge, Massachusetts: $1.4 million
- Davis, California: $1.05 million
- Keystone, Colorado: $995,000
- Palos Park, Illinois: $649,000
