2 Budget Airlines That Are Just As Punctual As the Major Carriers

If you’re going to pay hundreds of dollars for a flight and spend hours of your time on a plane, it should be as painless as possible. Some airlines can deliver that better than others.

Cirium’s latest annual On-Time Performance Review can help you avoid a headache. The aviation analytics company’s review details which airlines are most punctual, departing and arriving within 15 minutes of the advertised takeoff and landing times. Only one U.S. budget airline made the list of leading North American carriers.

So let’s take a look at the most punctual U.S. airlines — which now include two budget carriers — followed by those that came out on top in the global ranking.

5. Southwest Airlines

Total number of flights tracked in 2025: 1,422,405

Budget carrier Southwest Airlines was incorporated in 1967 and initially envisioned as a commuter air service traveling between three Texas cities: Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.

Its first flight took off in 1971 out of Love Field in Dallas, prompting the airline to adopt “love” as a theme for its promotions. In the 1970s, its in-flight beverages were even referred to as “love potions.”

4. United Airlines

Total number of flights tracked in 2025: 1,732,450

United Airlines is still a big player today, but in the 1930s, it held a “near monopoly” that led to new government legislation. The company once oversaw four airlines and was connected to Boeing, the airplane manufacturer.

To combat their grip on the market (and their payment practices), the Air Mail Act was passed in 1934. This forced aviation companies to separate themselves from manufacturers.

3. Spirit Airlines

Total number of flights tracked in 2025: 218,265

In a surprising twist, Spirit Airlines beat out United to take the third spot. The ultra-low-cost carrier started in 1980 as a tour operator called Charter One before rebranding to Spirit in 1992.

While often known for its “bare fare” model — where everything from seat selection to water costs extra — the airline has clearly focused on operational discipline. Despite facing financial headwinds in recent years, Spirit managed to get passengers to the gate on time more often than United or American.

2. Alaska Airlines

Share of this airline’s 2025 flights that arrived on time: 79.20%

Total number of flights tracked in 2025: 453,031

Alaska Airlines traces its roots back to 1932, first operating in Anchorage as McGee Airways and Star Air Service. It took on its current name in 1944. By the late 1940s, using surplus military aircraft, Alaska Airlines branched into worldwide charter work, including taking part in the Berlin Airlift in 1948.

1. Delta Air Lines

Share of this airline’s 2025 flights that arrived on time: 80.90%

Total number of flights tracked in 2025: 1,800,086

This marks the fifth consecutive year for Delta as the top-performing North American airline in the Cirium analysis. It was the only U.S. carrier to break the 80% mark for on-time arrivals.

The airline has maintained its lead despite the complex logistics of running one of the world’s largest networks. Cirium noted that Delta’s performance “reflects sustained operational focus that separates industry leaders from competitors.”
