Your spice rack could become the next casualty of rising grocery costs. McCormick & Company announced plans to raise prices in the coming months as new tariffs squeeze their bottom line, according to TheStreet.

During the company’s latest earnings call, CEO Brendan Foley laid out the stark reality of what tariffs might add to their costs. “In terms of 2025 in year exposure, it’s about $50,000,000,” he said, as reported by TheStreet. That’s a massive hit the company cannot simply absorb.

TheStreet notes that McCormick sources around 17,000 materials from over 90 countries, as many of its products cannot be grown in the U.S.

What this means for your grocery bill

McCormick said it will raise prices during the fourth fiscal quarter of 2025, TheStreet reported. When an industry leader bumps prices, smaller players often follow. Your favorite seasonings and spices could all cost more by fall.

The ripple effect could be worse than the initial splash. Combined with already inflated prices on meat, produce, and dairy, those extra dollars sting.

What to do immediately

Stock up on essentials while prices hold steady. A warehouse club membership could pay off right now. Bulk spices often offer deep discounts compared to regular grocery stores.

Generic brands deserve serious consideration. Many store-brand spices are significantly less expensive than premium products.

Thinking about starting a herb garden? It might be a great idea. Fresh herbs can deliver more flavor than dried versions anyway.way.

Cook strategically to minimize expensive seasoning

Build your collection around versatile basics, such as garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper. These affordable staples can transform most dishes without premium price tags.

Some cuisines naturally dodge the tariff bullet. Italian cooking thrives on garlic and herbs you can grow yourself. Mexican food relies on cumin and chili powder, which deliver big flavor without breaking budgets.

Whole spices can stretch dollars further than pre-ground versions. Peppercorns, cumin seeds, and coriander seeds stay fresh longer and can be ground as needed.

Culinary creativity over cost anxiety

Track your grocery spending closely. Compare prices across local stores and spot deals on pantry essentials. Some chains also offer price-lock guarantees, so take advantage of these when spices make the list.

Consider using a budgeting app, such as Origin, to create a separate category just for seasonings within your grocery plan. Treating spices this way can help prevent sticker shock and reduce impulse buys.

McCormick’s struggle with tariffs previews what might be coming for other food categories. “We are collaborating with our customers to implement surgical and strategic pricing, while also maintaining our volume momentum,” Foley explained during the earnings call, as noted by TheStreet.

The company is also working to decrease its reliance on any one geographic area and is seeking lower-cost sourcing alternatives to offset the effects of tariffs. However, Foley warned that many products cannot be substituted because they aren’t produced or available in the U.S.

The smart move is to prepare now rather than react later. Build up your spice reserves, explore alternatives, and remember that culinary creativity often thrives in challenging times.

Some of history’s most beloved dishes were born when cooks transformed humble ingredients with clever seasoning. Your grocery bill might climb, but your dinner plate doesn’t have to suffer.
