Your daily Starbucks run might start looking a little different at the register.
The coffee giant is rolling out a new system for drink add-ins like syrups, sauces, matcha, and more, according to CBS News. The goal is to streamline charges and make pricing more consistent across stores.
If you’re among the many who personalize your coffee, here’s how the changes could affect your order total.
The new pricing structure explained
Starbucks is moving to a flat 80-cent fee for any syrup or sauce added to unflavored drinks, CBS News reports.
The company said it won’t charge extra when customers swap syrups in pre-flavored drinks, such as replacing mocha with vanilla in a Caffè Mocha, CBS News reports.
Other add-ons have fixed rates, too: $1 for a scoop of matcha powder in non-matcha drinks and 50 cents for dried fruit toppings. According to the company, classic syrup, Starbucks’ version of liquid sugar, remains complementary.
Who saves — and who might pay more
If you’re someone who stacks flavors, this new pricing model might actually work in your favor. Custom drinks that used to rack up multiple add-on charges could now be more affordable.
Matcha fans may feel the impact, as the $1 charge applies even when adding it to a basic drink — a cost that can add up quickly for regular orders.
A Starbucks spokesperson said the company aims to provide better pricing transparency and consistent fees across U.S. stores, according to CBS News.
How to order smarter
Starbucks is testing an app feature that shows real-time pricing as you build your order, CBS News notes. Seeing each modification’s cost up front could help customers find the right balance of flavor and value.
With a flat fee for syrups and sauces, trying new combinations may be more appealing. Simplifying your order could also cut costs, reduce sugar, or lower calorie intake. Seasonal drinks that come pre-flavored offer another way to skip extra charges.
Your new coffee routine, your way
Starbucks’ pricing update adds transparency and consistency. Whether you tweak your usual order or scale back on visits, small shifts can make your coffee habit more budget-friendly and potentially more enjoyable.
