If you own an Anker PowerCore 10000, check it now.

According to CBS News, Anker is recalling about 1.15 million of these popular portable battery packs due to fire and burn hazards.

Here’s what to know and how to protect your home and bank account.

Who should inspect their charger?

The recall affects Anker PowerCore 10000 units with model number A1263, which can be found on the back or bottom. These were sold for about $32 from June 2016 to December 2022 through Anker’s website, Amazon, eBay, and Newegg.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) confirmed 19 incidents, including overheating and melting, around $60,000 in property damage, and at least two people with minor burns.

Don’t assume you’re safe because yours hasn’t failed yet; even older units can pose a risk.

How to check yours and avoid out-of-pocket surprises

Checking takes just a minute:

  1. Stop using it now — unplug it and store it away from anything flammable.
  2. Find your serial and model numbers on the charger.
  3. Visit Anker’s recall page and enter your serial number to see if it’s included.
  4. If yours is affected, follow Anker’s process carefully:
    • Take a clear photo showing the model and serial number.
    • Write your name, today’s date, and “RECALLED” directly on the unit.
    • Upload the photo using Anker’s online form.

Anker offers a free replacement, but CBS News points out the company hasn’t specified when it will arrive.

Hidden expenses — and how to handle them

Replacing a risky charger is free, but not costless. Here are some costs to note:

  1. Temporary charger expense: Buying a stopgap power bank can run $20–$40, so plan for this to avoid panic buying.
  2. Damage repair: If your charger scorched furniture, a bag, or another item, document everything now. Take photos, keep receipts, and check if your renters or homeowners’ insurance covers the loss. If it does, file a claim promptly.
  3. Device performance: If your phone or laptop battery starts misbehaving after using this charger, note it — some credit cards and extended warranties may help with repairs or replacements if you act fast.

Safe disposal: skip the liability risk

Throwing lithium-ion batteries in household trash or curbside recycling is dangerous and can spark fires, and you could be held liable for any resulting damage.

Better options:

  • Drop it off at your local hazardous waste center.
  • Ask electronics stores if they accept batteries.
  • Look up your city’s website for battery drop-off days.

A quick stop beats paying for fire damage later.

Protect your wallet from the next surprise recall

Faulty batteries aren’t rare, and surprise replacements or repairs can cost you. Here’s how to stay ahead:

  • Check the CPSC recall database a few times a year to catch hidden hazards.
  • Register new electronics when you buy them so companies can reach you directly if there’s a problem.
  • Sign up for free CPSC email alerts to get new recalls sent straight to your inbox.
  • Verify serial numbers before buying used chargers or batteries online; a cheap secondhand item could be a hidden hazard.

Warning signs your battery could cost you

The National Fire Protection Association says to stop using any battery-powered product immediately if you see:

  • A burning or chemical smell
  • Excessive heat during charging or use
  • Bulging, swelling, or leaks
  • Hissing or popping noises
  • Discoloration or scorch marks

This applies to power banks, phones, laptops, e-bikes and power tools, and swapping out a faulty unit is far cheaper than paying for fire repairs.

Act now, save later

If you own an Anker PowerCore 10000 A1263, stop using it, check the serial number, and claim your free replacement. Dispose of the old one properly.

CBS News reports that handling a recall is a hassle, but ignoring it could cost you your charger, your home, or a big chunk of your emergency fund. A few minutes today protects your wallet tomorrow.
