Tesla Delivered 480K EVs in the Spring. Did That Beat Expectations?

USA TODAY Network / Reuters

Tesla delivered 480,000 cars globally in the second quarter of 2026, according to a sales report released by the company on April 2.

The figure was up from the 358,023 cars Tesla reported selling globally in the first quarter of 2026. It was also up from the 384,122 vehicles Tesla reported selling in the spring of 2025.

“In the second quarter, we produced over 450,000 vehicles, delivered over 480,000 vehicles and deployed 13.5 GWh of energy storage products,” Tesla said in a press release. “Thank you to all of our customers, employees, suppliers, shareholders and supporters who helped us achieve these results.”

What Were Tesla’s Best-Selling Cars in the Second Quarter?

Tesla said the Model 3 and Y were its best-selling cars in the second quarter of 2026, selling a combined 467,762 units.

All other Tesla models sold a combined 12,364 units in the quarter, the company said. Tesla did not report individual sales figures for the Model 3 and Y.

How Did Tesla’s Sales Compare to Expectations?

Tesla had been expected to sell 114,629 cars in the U.S. in the second quarter of 2026, according to estimates from Cox Automotive. Tesla did not specify its domestic sales in its latest report.

Last year, 36% of Tesla’s global sales came from the United States, according to data released by both Cox and the company.

Charlie Chesbrough, senior economist at Cox Automotive, said industry sales overall have been relatively stable thus far in 2026.

“Although there is a tremendous amount of economic and policy uncertainty these days, the new-vehicle market seems to be relatively unfazed,” Chesbrough said. “Thus far, vehicle buyers have shrugged off the latest shock – the Iran War and higher gas prices – as new-vehicle sales have been fairly stable the last few months.”

How Did the Sales Affect Tesla’s Stock?

Tesla stock dropped about 3%, to nearly $412 per share, after the opening of trading Thursday, July 2, on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The stock was trading at $375 per share one week earlier, on June 25.
